On the 26th of August 2026, a massive section of glacier broke away on Langtang Lirung, an approximately 7,000m peak near the Nepal-China border. This then plunged directly into the Lhende Khola valley, falling roughly 1200m. The impact set off a catastrophic debris flow—a rapid mass of ice, rocks, boulders, mud, and uprooted trees—that tore almost 100 kilometres down the Trishuli River system, growing more powerful as it picked up additional debris along the way. A debris flow typically contains 50–80% solids by volume, causing significantly more damage than a flood. Communities in Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts had little to no warning: in some areas, river levels rose as much as 9 meters in just 30 minutes, sweeping away homes, bridges, roads, hydropower plants, and entire villages in the blink of an eye. Over 1,000 people are confirmed dead, with nearly 4,500 people still missing at the time of writing, and thousands of families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and access to basic services.
